Scott Hansen...
Hey Friends!
First things first, here's a little about myself.
I'm a junior finance major from the University of South Dakota (Go Yotes!) and will be graduating in Dec 07. Back at school I have been involved with Delta Sigma Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Student Ambassadors, Coyote Capital Management, The Entrepreneurship Team, and many others. I love it there!
How I got here.
I found out about the co-op program in a rather random way. One day my sophomore year I was looking around the internet for summer internships and came across the co-op website, said "why not," and decided send in my resume, cover letter, and transcript.next thing you know I'm in Houston and loving it. It goes to prove that you never know where you'll end up until you try it, so give it a try!

Why would a business major want to work here?
Right now I am just finishing up my second tour which has been in the Technology Transfer Office. So far this tour, I have wrote a Space Act Agreement, worked with scientists and engineers to disclose inventions and concepts, contacted small businesses about rights to innovations, and wrote a businesses plan for businesses to use as a guide when they apply for a NASA JSC license. It has been really cool to learn about what technology NASA has been licensing out for the development of new businesses and have gained some very valuable experience!

I completed my first tour in the Office of Education where I worked on three different projects. First, I contacted museums and schools across the country and distributed and gathered feedback on an educational program called NASA Brain Bites. Second, I helped with college recruitment which included interviewing, selection, and placement of summer interns. Third, I helped manage the Reduced Gravity Student Flight Program which is held out at Ellington Field. I also acted as the Reduced Gravity Program Co-op lead where I held different activities for students in this program to attend. The coolest thing about this tour is that I will be able fly aboard the C-9 Reduced Gravity Plane (A.K.A. "The Vomit Comet")!
How many other places allow a student to do that! I had an excellent time
working with everyone in education and highly recommend a tour there.
Social!!!!
Not only do you gain great work experience as a co-op, with 50-100 other co-ops here, you get to hang out with some great people from across the country. There is hardly a day when there isn't anything going on. Activities range from intramural sports, movies, plays, concerts, road trips, weekends at the beach, karaoke at the Outpost, grill-outs, and also tours of NASA's facilities and lectures from astronauts and flight directors. The co-op crew is some of the best people to be around!

All in all, the co-op experience can be summed up in the words of Keith Urban. "Who wouldn't want to be me" or in this case a co-op!! It definitely adds some spice to life. If you have any questions about the co-op program, shoot me an email at Scott.w.Hansen@nasa.gov or swhansen@usd.edu and I'll do my best to answer your questions. Best of luck to you!
